Exceptionally lovely Iroquois beaded small box purse! C/1860-80. This small purse was called a box purse or a fist purse. This one has a claret shade of velvet on front and back with a deep dark purple velvet on the sides. The entire purse is outlined in clear beads with a raised clear bead medallion at the center of all 4 sides. The inner border on the front and back also has raised beadwork - raised designs of transparent red, green, light blue, pale red and clear beads make up this inner border. The sides have less raised designs and include a gold color bead as well. The dangles have large round clear beads with large tubular dark green beads at the bottom. The lid has a blue wool fabric with 3 clear raised medallions at it's center. The handle is of 2 strands of clear beads with intermittent gold tubular beads. The lid and front and back are lined with blue polished cotton. The sides and bottom are lined with a plain white cotton.
This small purse is 4.5" long at longest and 3.5" high. It is 3.25" at deepest. The handle is 4" above the lid. NO bead loss. Slight flaw - a small hole in the blue cloth on the top.
