A hovering ruby throated hummingbird is atop this coiled sweetgrass basket by Paul St John, Mohawk. - The hummingbird of natural white with light and dark green, red and black dyed porcupine quills is on an oval birch bark medallion at the center of the coiled sweetgrass lid of the basket.
The ruby throated hummingbird is one of Paul's most beloved quill creations. This one is a beauty!
At 7" long, this basket is somewhat larger than most of Paul St John's oval baskets - most are between 5.25" - 6" long. The birch bark medallion is 5" long by 3.5" high
This basket has birch bark at center of lid and used as the bottom - then coiled tidal sweetgrass. It is 7" long, 5.5" across and about 2.5" high. The birch bark medallion at lid's center is 3.75" long and 2.75" wide. There is a border of natural white porcupine quills around the outer edge of the birch bark medallion - between the coiled sweetgrass and the medallion.
