Small "Angel" Basket with red curls

This lovely little basket by George Neptune, Passamaquoddy basket maker, has one of George's signature curl work styles, the "Angel Basket" curl. The Angel Basket curl is series of looping curls- the top curl cascades over the curl (or 2 curls) beneath it framing them in a unique and perfect fashion. There is a unique and winsome finial of red curls on the top of the lid .... completely charming!

This is a "drum" basket, round with straight sides and it has an overhanging lid. It is 2" tall to the top of the lid with the curls adding another 1/2" - 2.5" overall. And it is 2.5" in diameter (overhanging lid is 2.75" in diameter). Made of brown ash splints, the traditional material of Wabanaki basket makers (a federation of 5 tribes living in Maine, Eastern Canada and Vermont - the Abenaki, Maliseet, MicMac, Passamquoddy and Penobscot) This has plain tide sweetgrass wrapping the exterior rim of the basket lid and George has placed braided sweetgrass at the rim of the basket (inner rim). The braid of sweetgrass on the inner rim is something that a very few Passamaquoddy basket makers do, the late Clara Keezer among them.

See Information about George in the "bios" section of this website.
